I Love My Shop

Small Rhino is a treasure trove of emerging talent. Tucked away in the heart of Tasmania.

Who owns it?
Charlie & Friedel

What were you doing previously?
We became buddies during our final year of Art School, started doing freelance graphics work together and ended up in the same share-house. Now we just can't shake each other!

Where are you situated?
Shop 3, in the Bank Arcade. It's a cool little lane-way, just of Liverpool Street in Hobart's CBD. It's rad because we're opposite a chocolate boutique and a sushi bar!

What are the opening hours?
Monday to Friday, 10am-5:30pm and Saturday, 10am-4pm.

How did you get started?
We opened Small Rhino with the desire for a destination where fresh emerging design could be found! We were sick of having to to fly to Melbourne to find the things we love, so we found this cute little space, wrote lots of emails, made lots and lots of phone calls and somehow the Rhino started to grow! A quickie business course and some super-helpful friends made the entire process a little less daunting and confusing. However, thats not to say the ride has been without bumps and hiccups. We end up laughing at ourselves almost every day.

Describe your shop in a sentence.
Small yet a fun mix of thoughtful cuts, bold graphics, interesting ideas and a pinch of off-centre sophistication.

What does your stock?
Lots of swell goods! Alpha 60, Gorman, Limedrop, Princess Tina, Huffer, Hem & Haw, Cheap Monday, Trimapee plus local designers Swan & Spider, Tim Buckley and more new labels soon to be revealed. We also have lots of super-cool things like Lomography Cameras, Becko flip wallets, Nooka Watches, AM Eyewear, Micro Men and other irresistable treasures.

Who are your customers?
Friendly ladies and lads who like to buy things that are hard to come by.

What do you want to tell people about shopping in Tassie?
There is actually more than you would expect. The lack of big-name stores and homogenised trends leaves more room for modest originality. Plus the op shops here are killer.

What's special about your shop?
We deliberately limit our stock levels. This means you'll be one of only three or four people in Tasmania to look that great. Plus our brand-new wintertime renovation (we are excited about it)

What's the oldest thing in your shop?
Our goldfish Retaxus. He is two on the 13th of May, which is the same as our shop!
